Wimbledon 2010: Rollercoaster Roger in round 1

Wimbledon 2010 has begun, with the reigning world no. 1 Roger Federer almost shocking his fans around the globe with his rollercoaster performance. Alejandro Falla, a name that most tennis fans are not aware of would definitely be remembered for his stupendous performance and his near possibility of overcoming a major tournament shock. Looking back on the game; the first two sets seemed to be a little away from Roger’s hands, for his on court game was missing entirely. Roger’s backhand shots were poorly executed and he seemed to have run out of his magnificent strokes. Falla seemed to pull it off at the critical stages, breaking federer and avoiding the chances of tie breaker (7-5, 6-4; first two sets). Just when it seemed that Wimbledon were to witness a disaster; federer bounced back winning 3rd and 4th set; with a little difficulty though. Federer looked tiered during the match as it looked he was unable to digest the shock himself created at the start by falla and also his downplay shots. However at the end it was a victorious federer who came out of the slump. His experience and shot selection backed him during his last 3 sets. Especially the final set where federer cruised to a 6-0. Obviously falla was exhausted and gave up on his hope of beating federer at the grandest stage of all. To relive such an experience would be nerve cracking for federer and his loyal fans which include the T.V commentators who were totally perplexed at the scenario; since falla was considered the underdog. But then again, it’s all about handling pressure at the right moment which federer showcased with his determined attitude and experience. Falla would regret missing this opportunity but nonetheless he has shown that Roger Federer can be shocked on the least expected note giving federer’s future opponents a sign of belief.
